MBRIS
MBRIS (Marine Bio-Resource Information System) is an integrated information system designed to standardize marine biological resource data and systematically manage data from various institutions. This system enables efficient management and policy implementation for marine resources.
Under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK) is responsible for managing and operating the MBRIS. In collaboration with the Marine Fishery Bio-resources Center (MFBiC), MABIK provides an integrated database service for marine biological resource information. This service aims to establish sovereignty over marine biological resources, enhance public interest, and validate high-value bio-materials
Discovery-Collection-Curation-Research/Provision-Commercialization
Excavate
Collection of specimens for research and exhibition, acquisition of genomic samples, examination and isolation/cultivation of secured species, and gathering traditional knowledge.
Specimen Collection
Database integration of acquired specimen information, establishment of a biological information system, DNA barcoding analysis, and databasing of traditional knowledge
Curation and Management
Curation and management of specimens and biological materials
Research and Dissemination
Conducting research activities such as proliferation, cultivation, extraction, and utility studies
- Acquisition of biological materials (extracts, DNA, natural products)
- information system development
- specimen lending
- material distribution
- support for research activities
Commercialization
Support for research outcomes, industrialization activities, and promotion, application, and approval of marine life-related projects
Marine Biological Resource Acquisition and Management
Discovery of New and Unrecorded Species in Korean Waters
- New Species: Species identified for the first time globally.
- Unrecorded Species: Species previously documented abroad but newly discovered in Korea.
- Unheld Species: Species registered in the national species list but not held by designated or depository institutions.

Establishment of the National Marine and Fisheries Biological Species List
A comprehensive list of marine and fisheries species inhabiting Korean waters is compiled annually and provided by MABIK with the collaboration of Korean and international experts, in alignment with national policies.

Publication of Multimedia E-Books
- Introduction of marine organisms discovered through joint exploration surveys, featuring ecological photographs and videos.
